For a forklift operator, a license is not only a sign that he or she is an equipment operator, but it is also a safety badge. However, different states have different offices for registration and requirements may vary from area to area. Yet there are generally two types of licenses available to applicants – LO and LF.
Both of them have their own properties and are different from one another; getting one license does not mean that you are authorized to perform all forklift operations. It is crucial for an applicant to distinguish between the two, although he or she can get either one license or both.
LF License:
An LF operating license is also sometimes referred to as a high risk work license. This license only allows an individual to operate a basic forklift. The high risk work license fee is around $79. It is renewable and is easily achieved in the USA.
LO License:
A job requiring abilities beyond operating a basic forklift needs an LO License, which refers to not just operating a simple lift truck, but also carrying orders by using a complicated order picking machine; such machines are sometimes called stock-pickers. These machines can carry heavy loads and require extra training to operate.
What is License Test?
Getting license is the final part of your forklift training. To get any of the above licenses, you must pass a test which will allow you to become a certified forklift operator. To legally apply, you must be at least 18 years old.
The complete licensing program includes:
- 3-4 days of training that meets OSHA requirements
- Safety videos and journals
- Job placement assistance
- Practical work for operating
- Different levels of training are available for different licenses
After you pass the training program and test, the license issuance company will give you a certificate.
How to Renew License?
Being authorized one time doesn’t mean being authorized for life. Remember, the license will expire after three years! Some other causes for license cancellation and renewal requirements include:
- Switching to a new job
- New equipment placement
- Accidents by you
- You are observed handling industry equipment in a wrong manner
The company which issues you a license can accept your applications to renew them. However, to renew a license, you do not need to go through all of the previous steps. Companies are allowed to test you through a specially hired, qualified team. Hence, they may choose to renew your license and save you from a long, hectic process. It is mandatory for you to renew your license as soon as it expires due to any of the above reason.
Licenses are for your safety. So be sure to obtain them only in an authorized manner.
